The nesting feature of Blackboard course design builds the structure of course navigation for you. In a Blackboard course you will need to establish structure on course pages but not for the course navigation. Moodle, however, requires both an established structure for course pages and course navigation.

Moodle Course Organization

In a typical Moodle class, a student scrolls to the appropriate topic or week's heading and sees links to all of the materials, assignments, discussions, and assessments for that topic or week. All materials are available on the main course page. All content and activities are grouped together by topic or week not by content or activity type.

Labels are used to add organization within topics of a Moodle course. Different segments of a single week or topic can be grouped together under a label. Use plenty of labels to provide clear and easy navigation of your course.

Also, Moodle provides the ability to indent lines, which further adds to the visual organization of your Moodle course.

Establish Structure

As you build course organization, keep accessibility in mind. Structure must also be provided so that students who use assistive technologies can easily navigate a course. Use heading styles for topic titles and organizational labels to build a hierarchical structure. Nest the heading styles appropriately. If a topic title has a Heading 1 style, then the labels within that topic should start at Heading 2 level.

Once a heading style is applied, the text can also be formatted to fit the design of your course. Text color can be adjusted following color contrast guidelines. Text can also be bold, italics or underlined.

Remember:

  • Do not rely on color alone to convey information.
  • Do not overuse text formatting such as bold.
  • Do not use text formatting in the place of true heading styles.
